Pusha T’s Daytona earned him a Grammy nomination and praise from the hip hop community, but according to the emcee, it has nothing on his forthcoming album. Since releasing the project three years ago, the president of G.O.O.D. Music has been in the studio working on the new record that he already claims is better than the 2018 album.
“I think I’ve topped Daytona for sure,” he said in an interview with Billboard. “One-thousand percent.”
According to Pusha, the project will be produced by Kanye West and The Neptunes. Pharrell’s constructive criticism in the earlier stages of recording helped him to bring his A game.
“I was playing some raps for [Pharrell] in Miami and he was like ‘It’s cool, it’s good, but I think you’re gonna get mixed up with other people, and people thinking you’re all rapping over the same instrumental,’” he recalled. “I was like ‘You disrespectful jerk, you serious?’ and he said ‘Nah man, you’re always gonna say the greatest things but you want to be different? We’ve got to make compositions.’”
Now, as Pusha mentioned in previous interview with “Behind the Velvet Rope,” he believes he’s “gonna have the best album that drops in 2021.”
As of this story, there is no official release date for the album, which is currently being mixed and will include a few features that are in the process of being finalized. Pusha T hopes, however, to drop the new music complete with merch as well as digital and vinyl copies of the record.
As he prepares for the album’s release, the “Santeria” emcee told Billboard that he’s cleaning out his closet and selling some of his most valuable items on luxury menswear marketplace Grailed.
“I always have like a huge closet purge, usually yearly and definitely definitely going into an album cycle,” he explained. “It’s like, ‘Okay. What’s the look?’ And I have to like clear out my closet to be able to see where I’m going from here.”
