August Alsina has drawn concern from his fanbase after a cryptic social media post. On Monday (Sept. 20), the singer took to Instagram to tease some new music, but alongside the post was a disturbing caption.
“To all the loved 1’s who support me; These last couple projects are likely to be the last you see/hear of August Alsina,” he wrote. “W/ that said, it is my hope that we can enjoy each other while I’m here on my last victory lap around the sun. I’ll strive to make it as nostalgic as possible for you w/ beautiful tunes & high vibes. With great love, always.”
August has been battling with an autoimmune liver disease, which causes him to be “sick all the time.” He shared the news with his fans back in 2017 during an appearance on Jada Pinkett Smith’s “Red Table Talk.”
“I have a liver disease where my autoimmune system is fighting against itself,” he said at the time. “Reality is I’m sick all the time. I’d really like to talk about it and I’m not looking for anybody’s sympathy. Don’t treat me like I’m a fucking cancer patient because I’m not.” He later apologized to fans for his “defense mechanism,” and has sporadically been open up about his experience.
Two years ago, for example, the “I Luv This Shit” vocalist announced that he had nerve damage that resulted in both his ability to walk and the subsequent cancellation of his performance at the 2019 Essence Festival. In Monday’s post, he claimed he was on his “last victory lap around the sun,” a statement that immediately drew concern from fans and social media users.
“August Alsina has an autoimmune disease that attacks the liver,” tweeted Apple Music executive Karlie Hustle. “It doesn’t seem to be something that is treatable long-term from what I am reading. If his message seems ominous or urgent, it’s for good reason. I hope he gets his art out and lives well until his time is up.”
“I hope August Alsina is referring to retiring cause if he’s referring to something else,” added another Twitter user. “Ugh one of my favorites dawg. I can’t.”
