The death of Mikayla Miller, the 16-year-old girl whose body was found hanging from a tree in Massachusetts, has been ruled a suicide.

As NBC Boston reported, the cause of death was written on the late teen’s death certificate. The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office also announced that Miller died by suicide, noting the probe into the tragic death is still underway.

“Our investigation into the events surrounding Mikayla’s death remains active and ongoing,” the office said in a written statement released on Tuesday (May 18). “We will continue to explore every investigative angle necessary as we do that work, and intend to issue a complete and thorough report at the conclusion of the investigation.”

As REVOLT previously reported, Miller’s body was discovered in a wooded area the morning after she was involved in an altercation with a group of teens. Her mother, Calvina Strothers, said the 16-year-old was jumped by five white teenagers. Investigators later determined she actually fought only two of them. Police took statements from Miller, who revealed she was punched in the face, as well as the two teens she had a fight with.

Between 9 and 10 p.m. that night, Miller’s cell phone data showed she traveled 1,316 steps, “roughly the same distance from her home to the location where her body was found.” Based on cell phone records and witness accounts, neither of the teens were found to be in the area during that time.

Investigators told Strothers that her daughter died by suicide shortly after her death, but she was skeptical as she believed the conclusion was made prematurely. She’s also alleged that the case was being ignored because Miller was a Black woman in the LGBTQIA community. District Attorney Marian Ryan denied the claims and promised to “release every shred of legally releasable information” once the investigation is complete.
