The death of a 16-year-old Black girl in Hopkinton, Massachusetts is being investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

As reported by NBC, the body of Mikayla Miller was discovered by a jogger at about 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, April 18, one day after she reportedly got into an altercation with some other teenagers. Her mother called for an investigation into the mysterious death, and the district attorney’s office subsequently said that foul play was not suspected. Nearly a month later, with few answers reported to Miller’s family, some relatives began to believe that information was intentionally being withheld from them.

On Tuesday (May 4), District Attorney Marian Ryan held a press conference where she denied claims her office turned a blind eye to Miller’s case and addressed rumors regarding her death. According to the D.A. the 16-year-old got into a fight with one male and female in her apartment complex on Saturday, April 17 between 5:17 p.m. and 6:41 p.m. Hopkinton police responded to calls of the altercation and reportedly collected statements from Miller and the girl she fought.

At either 9:30 p.m. or 9:45 p.m., Miller’s mother went to bed under the belief that her daughter was home, but the teen’s cellphone shows she walked 1,316 steps right to the place where her body was discovered the following morning.

During the press conference, Ryan said that it was too early to claim the teen was killed in a racist attack death and urged many to wait for the autopsy results.

“We fully understand that people are looking for answers. And we are working on those answers,” she said. “And we are awaiting things, like a ruling from the medical examiner, as to the cause and manner of death. We are waiting on forensics. We are continuing to interview and follow up on interviews with people. So, all of that is happening.”

“What we can do and what we really owe her is an accurate and fulsome accounting of what happened and led to her death,” the D.A. continued. “You have my word as both the DA and as a mother who cannot imagine the tragedy of losing a child that we will deliver these answers.”

As the investigation into Miller’s death continues, family and friends of the teen are celebrating her life. On Friday (April 30), she was laid to rest. Some community members gathered today (May 4) to honor her in a vigil, and others will come together on Thursday (May 6) for a rally where further information will be revealed, per Miller’s aunt and mother.
