Shelley fka DRAM has held his own in the industry since his arrival back in 2015. Born Shelley Marshaun Massenburg-Smith, the rapper-singer spent half a decade in a vacuum of sorts. The success of Shelley’s debut single “Cha Cha” was the catalyst that sparked a movement, further fueled by his seven-times platinum single “Broccoli” featuring Lil Yachty. A cosign from Beyoncé only added to the fanfare, as Shelley became a household name in almost record time. Known for upbeat songs about love and other vices, the acronym DRAM (which stood for Does Real Ass Music) stopped having meaning, at least to its owner.

The German-American crooner hasn’t been on the scene as much in recent years, but it’s never too late to get back in motion — especially when you’re destined for it. Today, Shelley fka DRAM gets back in the swing of things with his sophomore album Shelley.

For the album’s announcement, Shelley fka DRAMA took to Instagram to speak on him honoring his late mother on the project: “As some of you may know my mom passed away last year,” he began in the caption. “Before she passed I played her my upcoming album and I begged her to promise she wouldn’t play it for anyone else. She held her promise and took the music with her beyond this life. Her birthday is April 29th, so I’m pushing my album Shelley FKA DRAM’s release date to April 29th as not only my gift back to her, but my promise to play it for the world.”

Aside from a handful of singles and his 2018 That’s A Girl’s Name EP, the multi-platinum rapper admittedly fell to the shadows in recent years, taking a moment to slow down after living too “fast,” in addition to taking the chance to focus on his health and well-being.
