The Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx have released a joint statement following the news that Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts for the murder of George Floyd.

“One year ago, George Floyd was murdered, causing unimaginable pain and trauma for his family, the Minneapolis community, and communities across the nation,” the statement read. “Our deepest thoughts have been with the Floyd family since this unjust tragedy. Throughout our history, racial and social inequalities have been ingrained in our society. We are hopeful that today’s decision will serve as a step forward, but it does not ease the physical and emotional pain that continues in an environment where systemic racism exists.”

“To our BIPOC community, the Timberwolves and Lynx remain committed to influencing change, promoting impactful action, and using our platform to help heal and unite in pursuit of liberty and justice FOR ALL,” the statement concluded.

On Tuesday (April 20), Chauvin was found guilty on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The jury only deliberated for 10 hours over a total of two days. Chauvin’s bond has been revoked and he was immediately taken away in handcuffs after the verdict was read.

Several members of the Lynx and Timberwolves took to social media to react to the guilty verdict. Karl-Anthony Towns tweeted, “Justice and Accountability! Things I never thought I would see. There’s much more work to do, but this is an amazing start working toward the reform this country NEEDS!” Malik Beasley wrote, “Tears of Joy #Justice,” followed by, “What a day to remember fr fr.”

“Justice,” tweeted Jarred Vanderbilt. “One step closer in the right direction. Change is happening.” Lynx guard Crystal Dangerfield wrote, “The world was watching. Accountability was the first step!! They got it right… GUILTY!!! #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd.”
