Moments after Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder and manslaughter, civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump took to Twitter to address the recently-announced verdict.

“Painfully earned justice has arrived for George Floyd’s family and the community here in Minneapolis, but today’s verdict goes far beyond this city and has significant implications for the country and even the world,” he wrote in a statement.

“Justice for Black America is justice for all of America. This case is a turning point in American history for accountability of law enforcement and sends a clear message we hope is heard clearly in every city and every state.”

“We thank Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and his team for their fierce dedication to justice for George,” he added before bringing attention to the forthcoming trial for Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao, who were also present during the time of Floyd’s death.

“It does not end here,”he said :We have not forgotten that the other three officers who played their own roles in the death of George Floyd must still be held accountable for their actions, as well.”

Crump’s statement comes after a 12-member jury comprised of six white people, four Black people and two multiracial people found Chauvin guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in George Floyd’s death.

The verdict garnered reactions from government officials in Minnesota as well as Black organizations like the NAACP and the Black Lives Matter movement.

“No verdict can bring George back, and my heart is with his family as they continue to grieve his loss,” said Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. “Minnesota mourns with you, and we promise the pursuit of justice for George does not end today. True justice for George only comes through real, systemic change to prevent this from happening again.”

Floyd’s family is also expected to make a statement later today (April 20).
