Lil Nas X’s single “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” has scored a number one placement on the Billboard Hot 100. The song debuted on the music chart, displacing “Peaches” — the previous chart topper by Justin Bieber featuring Daniel Caeser and Giveon.
Upon learning the news, Lil Nas took to Twitter to celebrate his accomplishment and address his critics. “I hope my haters are sad,” he tweeted. “I hope they are crying. I want your tears to fill my Grammy cup.” In a follow-up post, he shared a video of him talking to himself.
“I’m proud of you. I’m proud of you nigga. Yeah! Congratulations!” Lil Nas X says in the clip.
“You deserve all the good shit that’s happening to you right now. You deserve all that shit on God.” Alongside the clip, he penned the caption, “Made this video in June 2020 to congratulate my future self. Now we here!! NUMBER 1 BABY!”
“MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” became the center of controversy after Lil Nas X released a fantastical visual for the single. The video captures him as he rides a stripper pole into hell and gives the devil a lap dance. Though some fans praised him for his courage and creativity, others questioned the scene of him seducing Satan with an affectionate dance.
Joyner Lucas, in particular, took issue with what he perceived to be a drastic change in Lil Nas’ musical direction.
“I think the biggest problem for me is the fact he doesn’t understand ‘Old Town Road’ is every kid’s anthem,” Lucas previously tweeted. “Children love him for that record. They tuned in and subscribed to his channels. So, with no disclaimer, he just dropped some left-field ish & all our kids seen it. Smh.”
Lil Nas X later retorted, “I literally sing about lean & adultery in ‘Old Town Road.’ U decided to let your child listen. Blame yourself.”
