Kid Cudi isn’t happy with TikTok users. Yesterday (March 12), the rapper dubbed as “The Chosen One” on Twitter told his 2.5 million followers how he felt about his song, “Day ‘N’ Nite” being used on the burgeoning platform, TikTok.
“I dont fuck w what they did to my song on tik tok takin out the lyrics. We live in a strange time. Im not flattered,” he tweeted.
Cudi is referring to a new trend sweeping through TikTok , where users record themselves lip-syncing the lyric “Now, look at this” before sharing a random, often silly video. Over 200,000 clips have been created with Cudi’s “Day ‘N’ Night” track in the background and the #NowLookAtThis hashtag has over 500 million views on TikTok’s discover page.
One tweeter replied to Cudi calling the trend “wack.” “Very,” he replied. When another user insisted the situation isn’t “that deep,” Cudi explained he was sharing his feelings.
“I don’t think I’m making it ‘deep’ by tweetin’ how I feel,” he wrote. “Now if I was ranting that’s another thing. Nothing wrong w me stating I don’t approve, plus if u are such a fan, u know my lyrics are most important to me. I’m passionate about my shit so idc who has a problem w that.”
The song, “Day ‘N’ Night,” initially catapulted Cudi into the mainstream. It was released in 2007, and served as the lead single from Cudi’s standout mixtape A Kid Named Cudi. It was also featured on Cudi’s debut studio album Man on the Moon: The End of Day.
After peaking at number three on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, the Cudi and Dot da Genius co-produced-track, has since been certified 5x platinum by the RIAA. The song spawned several remixes and was even nominated twice for Grammy awards. It’s likely Generation Z missed the original buzz from the song, and now they’ve interpolated it in a way Cudi does not approve.
