For his first release of 2021, Phora has unleashed his new single “Loaded Gun.” The track comes paired with a cinematic music video that tells a story of a smoke and mirrors relationship cycle that ultimately leads to no good. On the song, Phora leads with his vulnerable lyrics:
I’ve been hurt by you too many times. So I keep you in my heart and not my life, and you’ve been broken, your heart’s just like mine. So we both pretend that everything is fine. I was so lonely inside, ’cause you led me and you broke me down and left me to die. Now I know the reason why, I feel so empty, all you did was kill me inside.
According to a Genius annotation, “Loaded Gun” was written over the course of 2020 and was finished on Jan 21st, 2021. He found it difficult to drop “Loaded Gun” since he considered it to be “his saddest song he’s made.” Motivation from his supporters is what eventually led him to share the track. “So proud of this one,” Phora writes about the new video. “Thank you to those who motivated me to release this song, I still hold it close to my heart. At first I was scared of trying something different, my confidence wasn’t there… but I’m glad I had you guys to believe in me, and help me believe in myself!”
In November, Phora released his album With Love II via his own imprint Yours Truly Records, now an independent artist after spending a chunk of his career with Warner Records. In celebration of the release, he shared an official lyric video of one of the stand out tracks “This Weekend” featuring Ty Dolla $ign. The project was preceded by singles like “Stars In The Sky” feat. Jhene Aiko, “Cupid’s Curse” feat. Kehlani, and the visual for “Traumatized” feat. Toosii.
