With bars and nightclubs either shut down or coerced to enforce capacity limitations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, bartenders have been struggling, and many people have found themselves learning the recipes of their favorite cocktails and mixing their own drinks.
In a Super Bowl hijack commercial, Diddy, David Beckham and Ryan Reynolds took a crack at bartending and attempted to create a special alcoholic beverage for the annual NFL event. In their minds, the drink would come out perfect as long as it comprised of Diddy’s DeLeón Gin and Tequila, Reynolds’ Aviation American, Beckham’s Haig Club Whiskey and “natural flavors from Tampa Bay and Kansas City,” but a small sip of their mixtures would prove otherwise.
Upon tasting the concoctions, the spirits brand owners spit up before sharing their honest opinions with each other. Reynolds uttered a sentence filled with expletives; Diddy said the drink tastes like “ass feet,” and Beckham simply concluded, “This is not going to work.”
As a result of their failed attempts, the three men realized mixology wasn’t their forte and decided instead to donate some money to the professional bartenders who have been financially affected by the public health crisis. Diddy, Reynolds and Beckham are now reportedly donating $1 million to mixologists with hopes to help them stay afloat.
The contribution will come from spirits parent company Diageo — which owns the A-Listers’ aforementioned alcoholic brands — and will specifically go to Another Round, Another Rally (U.S.), Bartender’s Benevolent Fund (Canada) and Drinks Trust UK — three organizations that have assisted bartenders facing income loss since the start of the pandemic.
“Salute to the real mixologists!” Diddy wrote in a caption alongside his post of the commercial. “You are appreciated!!”
