The death of Casey Goodson Jr., the 23-year-old man who was killed in a deputy-involved shooting, has been ruled a homicide, according to Franklin County coroner Dr. Anahi M. Ortiz.

Ortiz shared a press release revealing the information from a preliminary autopsy as well as the conclusion formed on those findings. “Casey Goodson was pronounced on December 4, 2020. An autopsy was performed on December 8, 2020. Based on findings from the autopsy and medical death investigation, manner of death is homicide,” read the release.

Results from the final autopsy report are expected to be released in a few months.

“Cause of death, at this time, is preliminary; we are awaiting medical records as well as the toxicology report,” the statement continued. “However, based on the current findings, cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. We anticipate a final report in approximately 12 to 14 weeks.”

Goodson Jr. was fatally shot on Dec. 4 by Franklin County SWAT Deputy Jason Meade, who was working on a fugitive task force at the time. Conflicting reports have since surfaced regarding the events that led to the fatal shooting.

Per authorities, Goodson Jr. brandished a gun at deputies as they were completing an unrelated operation in the area. Officers reportedly confronted him, but as he exited his car to speak, he held on to the gun, and Meade fired at him.

The victim’s family, however, maintains the 23-year-old man was shot in the back as he was entering his home with some sandwiches, adding his gun — which was reportedly recovered at the scene — was a licensed piece.

On Tuesday (Dec. 8), the FBI announced they’d be joining the local police, the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice and the Columbus Police Critical Incident Response Team to “review the facts and circumstances” in Goodson Jr.’s fatal shooting.
