Chloe x Halle are the latest celebrities to bless the “Tiny Desk” stage with their amazing vocals. NPR revealed the almost 20-minute performance on Tuesday (Dec. 8). The duo performed their hits “Do It,” “Don’t Make It Harder on Me,” “Wonder What She Thinks of Me” and “Ungodly Hour.”
Before they got into the track “Baby Girl,” Chloe shared an uplifting message to their fans. “I know this year 2020 has been absolutely bonkers for all of us, and for those moments where you kind of feel less than or you’re not good enough, that’s why we wrote this song,” she said. “For ourselves as a mantra to let us know that whatever happens, we’ll be OK. This is our world.”
Although this year was an emotional rollercoaster for many, it was truly a breakout year for Chloe x Halle. Their hit single, “Do It,” became their first track to make it to Billboard’s Hot 100. The song peaked at No. 63 and spent 11 weeks on the chart.
Their newest album, Ungodly Hour, peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 chart. The release of the project was initially pushed back following the killing of George Floyd. “We are two young Black women,” said Halle in an interview with Billboard. “We know how heavy our steps are. We know what it is to fear for your life. We have a little brother who’s 15, who’s so tall, so handsome, so smart. When we see the things that happened to George Floyd, it scares us for his life. It scares us for our father’s life.”
She continued, “That whole week was a roller coaster of emotions. We went on shutdown mode and thought, ‘Do we still release this music?’ Music has been used since our ancestors as a healer, as a way to get through pain. We ultimately decided to back it up a week. The next week still felt very heavy, but at the same time we felt like our music could bring some peace and healing.”
On Thursday (Dec. 10), the sisters will be honored with the Rising Star Award at Billboard’s Women in Music event.
