As soon as the calendars officially flipped to the month of December, artists began to share their holiday songs and albums, and R&B favorite Giveon is the latest to join the list. Today, the Long Beach native officially shared his rendition of a the Christmas classic, “O Christmas Tree.”
The twenty-five year old singing sensation is planning to end his 2020 strong. His debut EP Take Time was met with critical acclaim, most recently grabbing a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album and also a song placement on Season 4 of HBO’s Insecure with his track “World We Created.”
Giveon landed in the spotlight thanks to his vocals on Drake’s “Chicago Freestyle,” coupled with the release of his own well-loved single “Like I Want You.” The video went on to garner 17 million views on YouTube alone, and the single has reached over 105M US streams to date across streaming platforms, peaking at #16 on the Billboard Emerging Artist chart and #25 on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart.
In a recent sit-down with VICE, Giveon delved a bit about where he draws his songwriting inspiration from:
It starts with just a normal dialogue between friends. I don’t tell them that I’m looking for inspiration or anything like that. We just talk and I’ll take a mental note, then go home and make the song. I don’t even tell them it’s about them or their situation. They’ll just hear it and be like, This sounds real familiar. I’ll be like, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t even let them claim that it’s their story. The hardest part is writing a song as a story. A song is so short and there are only so many words that every line has to hit. The words have to flow.
