On Tuesday (Sep. 29), Saweetie revealed to her fans that her mother used to be a video model in the early 2000s for some of hip hop’s biggest stars.
In a season two episode of “The Icy Life” Youtube series, the “Tap In” rapper told her fans that her mother, Trinidad Valentin, was featured in videos for Nelly’s “Ride Wit Me” and DMX’s “What These Bitches Want.”
During the show, Valentin made a remark about her daughter not wearing enough clothes. “D, where is the rest of your outfit?” she asked. Saweetie looked at the camera and said, “She act like she ain’t used to be wearing this back in her day.”
The episode then showed flashback clips of Valentin dancing in the videos she previously starred in. Saweetie then says, “Mom, she don’t be on ‘The Icy Life’ yet, but this is my mom, and she act like she ain’t used to be one of us back in her day.”
Valentin isn’t the only person in Saweetie’s family who is connected in Hollywood. The “Pretty Bitch Freestyle” emcee is second cousins with actress Gabrielle Union. She is also related to Willie Harper, a former San Francisco 49ers linebacker.
Although Saweetie had famous family members before she made a name for herself, she did not want them to help her break into the industry. During an interview on “Desus & Mero,” the Bay Area rapper talked about not wanting a handout from her family.
“They were all kind of upset at me because they heard ‘My Type’ and was like, ‘We didn’t know you was doing music. What you doin’ over there?’” she said. “But me, I have so much pride. I believe in being self-made and trying to figure things out on my own. I appreciated that they reached out and was like, ‘We see what you’re doing. Our friends keep talking about you. We see you and if you need our help, please let us know.’ So, I appreciate the support, but for me, like, I’ve always been self-motivated. So, instead of asking for help, I just wanted to see if I could do it on my own.”
