Jessie Reyez recently surprised her fans with the release of the extended BEFORE LOVE CAME TO KILL US+ album. The two brand new songs are titled “ Sugar at Night” and “No One’s in the Room,” and the latter track even came paired with a music video.
In the Bizness Boi-produced “Sugar At Night,” Jessie sings verses laced with intense regret about an ex lover that she wishes she could’ve foreseen:
“You stole my good years and my phone calls, I wish I could’ve seen you comin’ in some tarot cards. I could’ve dodged your cheating and some bad scars. Now I’m stuck sellin’ a broken heart and old parts.”
The Colombian/Canadian artist’s debut album BEFORE LOVE CAME TO KILL USwas originally released in March, and the official deluxe version was shared the month after. The 17-track album included features from Eminem, 6lack, A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, JID, Rico Nasty, and Melii.
In a recent interview with NME, Jessie reflected on the belief that holds her together, and how she hopes that message came through in her album when people press play:
“Every day you’re paying homage to the fact that man can make plans but God laughs. As much as we think our lives are in our hands, if it’s written that it’s gonna all end tomorrow then it’s gonna all end tomorrow. If we embrace that, we know that we’re gonna make the best of today. If someone has to walk away with something [from this album] then I hope they walk away with the idea of life’s urgency.”
