Rico Nasty has been on a meteoric rise the last couple of years, having delivered both well-received projects and a slew of loose singles for her fans to enjoy. She released Nasty and the Kenny Beats-produced Anger Management in 2018 and 2019, respectively, and liberated tracks like “Popstar,” “Dirty,” “Lightning,” “IDGAF,” and — most recently — the infectious ‘iPhone.” Now, she unveils her new single “Own It,” which sees her continuing the aggressive bars that she’s known for over the track’s bouncy production:
“JPG, stunt when I walk, talk my s***, I ain’t gonna stop, when I walk in, jaws gonna drop, they all in my face, wanna know what I got/
Love what you see, you wanna deal, all my s*** so hot, yeah, I bet you catch a feel, brand-new Crocs, you wanna steal, I don’t know who you are if I’m keeping it real…/”
The accompanying visual is no less creative than previous clips, with Rico rocking creative designs in trippy, colorful locations. Rico Nasty is arguably one of the few artists in hip hop truly pushing the boundaries of style as well as genre with every one of her releases.
“Own It” is expected to appear on Rico Nasty’s forthcoming debut LP Nightmare Vacation, which will hopefully be released before year’s end. Speaking to NME, the Prince George’s County, Maryland star revealed her thoughts on where she feels her music belongs, and it’s clearly not an easy question to answer:
“I don’t know where I fit… I don’t really resonate with punk stars because I’m not that hardcore. I like bubbles and stuff; I’m not harsh and crazy. And with this new album, I definitely resonate with being a pop-punk princess.”
