Monica is showing her support for her ex-boyfriend C-Murder, who is currently serving a life sentence at the Louisiana State Penitentiary. In an Instagram Story, the Grammy Award-winning singer said she would join him in his legal battle to prove his innocence.
“You are not alone,” she wrote. “The fight is about to change because you will not fight alone! Your daughter and Tru Family deserve to have you with them! I’m about to be on some other sh*t.”
Back in 2002, C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, was arrested in connection with the shooting death and beating of a 16-year-old fan named Steve Thomas. He was sentenced to life in prison in August of 2009, but has continued to maintain his innocence in the crime.
Controversy surrounding the case stemmed from the jury and key witness testimonies. The president of the NAACP in Louisiana, Ernest Johnson, requested an investigation into the trial’s jury deliberation after one juror came forward and claimed that she and another jury member had been pressured and verbally abused for their decision to acquit C-Murder by the rest of the jury. The abuse made her cast a guilty vote, she said, rather than the case’s evidence. In the end, C-Murder was convicted of second-degree murder charges in a 10–2 verdict.
C-Murder appealed his conviction due to the juror’s claims, but the court upheld it. Then, in 2018, two key witness recanted their testimonies and said they had been pressured by investigators to testify against C-Murder.
The No Limit artist — and brother to Master P — shares how his conviction has affected his family through his Instagram account, where he also sells merchandise to support his daughters.
“Being wrongfully convicted affected the lives of the most important people to me! My daughters!” he wrote in a recent post.
It’s unclear how Monica intends to help C-Murder, but she and his family have continued to be vocal in their support of him on social media. See her her message to her former boyfriend below.
