It looks like J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar have scrapped plans to put out a joint album.
On Wednesday (May 20), Top Dawg Entertainment President Terrence “Punch” Henderson took to Twitter to answer fans’ questions about Lamar and Cole’s rumored project.
Twitter user @i4ops tweeted Punch, “We want Kendrick.” He responded asking, “What do you want with him?”
Another fan responded, “I wanna put [Lamar] on a 3 track EP with @JColeNC coz the world is going through a lot and that alone would make the world so happy. Please make it happen.”
Punch responded by tweeting, “That’s never going to happen.” Another fan then asked if they were releasing something bigger than an EP, to which Punch responded, “0 tracks. Not happening.”
Back in 2010, the “DNA” rapper told Vibe that he and the Dreamville MC had “a lot of music. Imma put it to you that way. It might not be just one song.”
A year later, he intensified the rumors by confirming to XXL that a joint project was in progress.
“We don’t have a title or release date yet, but J. Cole got like 90 percent of the production so far,” he said. “One of my favorite songs of the project is a song called ‘Shock the World.’ Cole laid the first verse and set the tone for the whole record. It’s going to shake up a lot of people.”
As the years passed, a joint album never came to existence. In 2017, the TDE President tweeted that the project would “probably never” get released. He later recanted his comments by saying he was “just paying.”
“I was just playing about that Dot and Cole joint,” he tweeted. “It’s coming for sure maybe. I don’t know it might happen. Probably. Actually hit them.”
