Last night (April 30), Drake announced the arrival of his surprise Dark Lane Demo Tapes mixtape and, unsurprisingly, social media is freaking out. The 14-track tape includes assists from Future, Young Thug, Playboi Carti, Chris Brown, Fivio Foreign, Giveon and Sosa Greek.
Comprised of leaks, old cuts and new music to hold fans over, Dark Lane Demo Tapes also sees Drizzy’s most recent TikTok-dominating singe, “Toosie Slide,” his “When To Say When” and “Chicago Freestyle” double drop from earlier this year and his 2019 single, “War.”
Along with the new project, Drake also set a tentative release date for his forthcoming sixth studio album.
“My brothers [Oliver El-Khatib] and [OVO Noel] put together alot of the songs people have been asking for (some leaks and some joints from SoundCloud and some new vibes),” he wrote on Instagram. “DARK LANE DEMO TAPES out everywhere at midnight…also my 6th STUDIO ALBUM DROPPING SUMMER 2020!!! Lucky number 6… soon fwd.”
Until now, the OVO boss has only provided limited details about his forthcoming Scorpion follow-up. Speaking with Diddy on Instagram Live, Drake said this is “the most excited” he’s been about an album in “a long time.”
“I’m working on the album, I’ve been working on it for awhile now,” he told Diddy. “Another silver lining [to social distancing] is when God does get you to sit down — I remember the last time I had to sit down was when I tore my ACL, and I made a great album out of that.”
“Definitely, this is the most excited I’ve been about an album in a long time,” he continued. “A lot of little stuff has been trickling out, but all the stuff on the album is fresh, it’s brand new and I’m excited. This is probably the most music I’ve ever been sitting on. I’m hyped.”
So far, Dark Lane Demo Tapes has caught the attention of fans, fellow rappers and NBA point guard, Trae Young. See some Twitter reactions to the mixtape below.
