Two Atlanta officers have been relieved from active duty after their responses to a recent arrest were captured and shared on social media.

According to Alive 11, a woman in Summerhill got into an argument with someone in her apartment on Monday (July 26). Cops dispatched to the scene after receiving calls of “a domestic incident” and an armed woman who “was walking around and had pointed a gun at several people.” Upon their arrival, the sergeant attempted to place the woman in handcuffs, but she allegedly spit on his boots and pants. In response, he kicked her in the head as she laid face down on the floor.

The officer’s partner remained mum and watched as the incident went down.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was evaluated following concerns with her mental health. Meanwhile, the video of the incident was brought to the attention of the Atlanta Police Department, who immediately condemned the cops for falling “outside of our standard and training.”

“Upon reviewing the video, the actions of the sergeant appear to be unacceptable,” ADP said in a statement. “The decision was made to immediately relieve the sergeant and the officer from duty and place the sergeant on unpaid suspension.” The sergeant was punished for his excessive use of force against the woman, while the accompanying officer was punished for “lack of reaction” to the attack.

Per the statement, the Office of Professional Standards is conducting a “thorough investigation” with hopes “to determine the facts surrounding this incident.”

“The Atlanta Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards (OPS) was directed to open an investigation into the actions of all employees on-scene and their investigation is to be expedited,” the department wrote. Pending the results of the probe, Chief Rodney Bryant will “determine the proper course of action.”
