Bill Cosby’s attorney discussed the update to his 2018 sexual assault conviction during a recent news conference. On Wednesday (June 30), the comedian appeared before the media alongside Brian Perry, who spoke on his behalf.
“We’ve said from day one, we just didn’t think he was treated fairly. And that…the system has to be fair, and fortunately the [Pennsylvania] Supreme Court agreed with us,” said Perry. “He’s happy, his wife is happy. The system only works if it’s fair to all sides. That’s the bottom line.”
The conference with Cosby and Perry was intended to address the Supreme Court’s decision to vacate the comedian’s conviction on sexual assault charges.
The conviction stemmed from the alleged drugging and molesting of Andrea Constand at his home in 2004. Per the court, however, an agreement with a previous prosecutor prevented him from being charged in the case, resulting in his charges being dropped.
While Perry spoke to the media about his client’s overturned sentence, Cosby remained mum during the conference. His sentiments on the ruling were later articulated on his Twitter account, where he officially broke his silence.
“I have never changed my stance nor my story,” the comedian penned in a tweet. “I have always maintained my innocence. Thank you to all my fans, supporters and friends who stood by me through this ordeal. Special thanks to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for upholding the rule of law. #BillCosby.”
Cosby’s newfound freedom has been a topic of conversation since the news was reported earlier today. His accusers and victims of sexual assault were disappointed by the news, while others, including Lil Duval, reacted to his prison release in a joking manner. Phylicia Rashad initially expressed her support for her friend from “The Cosby Show,” but in a surprising twist, she retracted her statement to back survivors of sexual assault.
