Barack Obama applauded the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act.

On Thursday (June 17), the Supreme Court ruled to sustain Obamacare, which will ensure health insurance for millions of Americans. “Today, the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act. Again,” the former president tweeted. “This ruling reaffirms what we have long known to be true: the Affordable Care Act is here to stay. The principle of universal coverage has been established, and 31 million people now have access to care through the law we passed — with millions more who can no longer be denied coverage or charged more because of a pre-existing condition.”

Obama continued, “Now we need to build on the Affordable Care Act and continue to strengthen and expand it. That’s what @POTUS Biden has done through the American Rescue Plan, giving more families the peace of mind they deserve. And because he extended the special enrollment period until August 15th, anyone who needs coverage can go to http://HealthCare.gov and sign up.”

Republicans have sought to dismantle Obamacare for years. GOP Sen. John Barrasso criticized the Supreme Court’s decision. “The failed Obamacare system will stagger on as a result of this decision,” he said. “Every American’s health care has been harmed by Obamacare.”

President Joe Biden said the Supreme Court’s decision helped everyday Americans not have to worry about coverage due to pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes. “Because of the law, they are able to get free preventive screenings that can save their lives and improve their health,” the president said in a statement.

“Today’s victory is also for all the young people who can stay on their parents’ insurance plan until they turn 26 years old, and for the millions of low-income families and people with disabilities receiving health care because their states expanded Medicaid under this law,” he added.
