Ma’Khia Bryant — the 16-year-old girl fatally shot by police — will be laid to rest today (April 30) after a funeral service at the First Church of God in Columbus, Ohio. The teen’s family and friends gathered at the church at 1 p.m. EST to honor her with “the dignity that she deserves.”

“Ma’Khia attended Independence High School as an 11th-grade student. She was currently on the honor roll,” Ma’Khia’s obituary reads. “Making TikTok videos doing her hair was her favorite pastime. She enjoyed cooking and music.”

“Ma’Khia had a great sense of humor; always wanted to make everyone laugh. She was a loving teenager with a big heart and she loved her family very much,” it added.

Ma’Khia’s funeral service arrives days after the Columbus mayor voiced his support for a federal investigation into her death. In a letter, Mayor Andrew Ginther and City Attorney Zach Klein said they needed the agency’s assistance in “reforming” the city’s police department after a number of police-involved deaths over the past few months.

“This is not about one particular officer, policy, or incident; rather, this is about reforming the entire institution of policing in Columbus,” the letter read. “Simply put: We need to change the culture of the Columbus Division of Police.”

As reported by REVOLT, Ma’Khia was fatally shot by officer Nick Reardon, who responded to her 911 call about a fight happening at her foster home. Ma’Khia’s aunt says she armed herself with a knife to fight off a female attacker. Body camera video of the incident showed Reardon firing multiple shots at Ma’Khia while she was holding a knife up to a woman shortly after he arrived at the scene.

The shooting is currently under investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Tragically, Ma’Khia’s death is the third high-profile police killing in the Columbus area in the past few months. Casey Goodson Jr. was killed by a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy last December and, later that month, Andre Hill was fatally shot by a cop. The First Church of God also hosted the funeral services for Goodson and Hill.
