A former officer in Ohio is facing a new charge in connection to the death of Andre Hill, the Black man who was fatally shot in December while in his garage.

During an arraignment in February, Adam Coy, an ex-cop in Columbus, was already indicted on charges of murder, felonious assault and dereliction of duty-for failing to turn on his body camera-in the death of Hill. More recently, however, while at a recent court hearing on Wednesday (April 28), a grand jury added a charge of a reckless homicide against him, to which his lawyer entered a not guilty plea.

Coy’s attorneys argued that their client’s camera was off as he responded to a non-emergency call, which does not require the activation of cameras and therefore didn’t violate any guidelines. The two dereliction of duty charges — one of which refers to his failure to turn on his body camera — were later dismissed by prosecutors in the case.

On Dec. 22, Coy responded to calls about a car on the road that had been turning on and off. When he arrived at the scene, he encountered Hill in the garage with a cell phone that he allegedly thought was a gun, and fired his weapon moments later. The cop’s body camera was off at the time, but some of the incident was captured on a “look back” feature from Coy’s body camera.

As REVOLT previously reported, Coy was released on bond back in February after posting $1 million bond, a reduction from one third less than the original amount of $3 million. At the time, it was understood that his early release conditions include giving up her passport and refraining from any communication with other cops associated with the case.

McIntosh asked for the bail conditions to remain the same. Coy’s next scheduled court date is on June 7.
