Back in June, Teyana Taylor unveiled her third studio album, simply titled The Album, that boasts a healthy 23 tracks and collaborations alongside Rick Ross, Erykah Badu, Quavo, Kehlani, Missy Elliott, Future, Davido, Big Sean, Lauryn Hill, and more. This week, she continues the momentum with a new visual for “Still,” which is produced by U-N-I and Wallis Lane and sees Taylor in her emotions in regards to what’s happening to Black America.
The accompanying video begins with footage of Malcolm X, Jim Crow laws, and acts of police brutality. After seeing names of Black lives lost, Teyana can be seen putting herself in the shoes of Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, and more. Add in addition clips of protests and violence happening around the country, and you have one of the most powerful clips created in the wake of the renewed battle again systemic oppression.
Taylor further explained the meaning behind “Still” to Apple Music:
“It’s about being Black in America and everything that we’re going through. We’re constantly crying for love, we’re constantly crying for hope, we’re constantly crying for peace. It just seems like nothing’s wiping our tears. We’re getting places, but it’s not enough. We need more. … I get emotional seeing my people go through what they’re going through and waking up to my husband and my baby every morning and looking at my husband while he sleeps knowing that, above all, you’re a Black man first. I take that risk with you walking out that door….”
Back in June, Teyana Taylor used her visual for The Album cut “Wake Up Love” to reveal that she and NBA star Iman Shumpert were expecting their second child together. Prior to that, the G.O.O.D. Music artist liberated equally dope videos for “Bare With Me” and “Made It.”
