Tyler Perry is stepping up to take care of the funeral costs for Rayshard Brooks, the 27-year-old Black man who was fatally shot by Atlanta police officers after falling asleep in his car at a local Wendy’s.
Chris Stewart, the family’s attorney, revealed the news during a press conference on Monday (June 15). “We do want to acknowledge and thank Tyler Perry, who we spoke with [and] who will be taking care of the funeral for the family,” he said.
He continued, “It’s support like that and it’s people who are actually in this community that love the community, that want healing and families like this to never have to go through something like this, to step forward. And we want to thank him for such a generous move.”
Brooks was shot and killed on Friday (June 12) by Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe. Police say Brooks fell asleep in the Wendy’s drive-thru Friday night and failed a sobriety test. When they tried to take him into custody, he resisted and reportedly stole one of the police officers’ taser.
In the viral video of the incident, Brooks can be seen running from law enforcement. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Brooks aimed a taser at the officers before Rolfe fired his weapon.
“While there may be debate as to whether this was an appropriate use of deadly force, I firmly believe that there is a clear distinction between what you can do and what you should do,” Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said in a news conference. “I do not believe that this was a justified use of deadly force.”
Brooks was taken to a local hospital where he later died after surgery. One of the officers was treated for minor injuries and discharged. Since the shooting, Rolfe has been terminated and the other officer on the scene has been placed on administrative duty. The fatal shooting was ruled a homicide.
