Back in February 2020, Pop Smoke was fatally shot in Hollywood Hills, California. According to TMZ, the investigation has been pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The outlet reported that the late rapper’s killer remains unknown, noting that it’s become difficult to find leads due to the pandemic. Following the shooting, police speculated that the “Welcome to the Party” spitter was targeted as a result of gang-related activity.

The news came after the Brooklyn rapper’s team announced a June 12 release date for the former’s first posthumous album. Prior to that, a statement was made regarding upcoming music projects. “Bashar ‘Pop Smoke’ Jackson — so genuine, bright, loving, and so full of promise. A rare soul, wise beyond his yeas whose smile, voice, mere presence would brighten the room,” a joint statement from Pop Smoke’s former manager Steven Victor and his family read. “He was all the things one could hope for in an artist, friend, leader and partner. Pop’s passing leaves us all broken hearted with a wound that will never heal.”

The statement continued, “The public show of support and grief, by everyone touched by Pop during his lifetime, has provided some semblance of comfort during these difficult times for his family, friends and colleagues. Throughout the next year we will be sharing new music, as we continue to work to build Pop’s legacy. In conjunction with his estate we will be making formal announcements on his foundation and music projects. We love him so much and miss him dearly.”

During an interview with Complex earlier this year, Pop revealed that he was working on a documentary about his life. “I’m gonna put out a movie or a documentary. I’m gonna make that s**t about me. Walk ‘em through where I used to live, where I used to be at, and why [police] look at me the way they look,” Pop said before his passing.
