We’re not too far from the return of Max B. Having been in prison since 2009, the self-proclaimed Wave God has managed to keep the streets fed with new music, having released an album, an EP and a slew of mixtapes over the past decade. With his pending release date in 2021, Max has continued to turn up the heat with his special brand of hard-hitting raps and infectious melodies. His latest is the new project titled Wave Pack, which features a whopping 26 tracks from the Harlem emcee and a single feature from Mak Mustard.
The bulk of the cuts on Wave Pack are already hood classics, but it does come with a couple of fresh singles. “Phenomenon” is a retro-funk offering that was produced by the legendary Dame Grease, while the grimier “Run Homeboy Run” sees production from DJ VIP. The release definitely has enough tunes to hold over Max B’s fanbase for another year. He spoke on how the latter came to fruition (via Hypebeast):
“The ‘Run Homeboy Run’ concept was wild… My brother VIP just started making beats he went out and spent his own money on equipment and started customizing beats just for me and he just went in the cut and practiced for like two years before even letting me hear a beat… Finally after two years he sent me the tracklist and ‘Run Homeboy Run’ was the third one I did from his package.”
Max B could be heard alongside the likes of French Montana and Kanye West over the past few years, having co-starred on Wave Gods with French and appeared on the “Siiiiiiiiilver Surffffeeeeer Intermission” from Kanye’s The Life Of Pablo. Most recently, he dropped off the impressive House Money EP, which saw additional assistance from Dave East, French, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Jadakiss, Wiz Khalifa, Cam’ron and A$AP Ferg. Unsurprisingly, Jim Jones — who Max fell out with following his departure from ByrdGang — has yet to reunite with the incarcerated rapper on wax.
