On Sunday (June 30), a classic piece of cinema not only reached its 30th anniversary but was celebrated in the most epic, fitting fashion.

In celebration of Do The Right Thing turning 30, Spike Lee's iconic work was at the center of his annual Brooklyn block party this year.

This year's event took place on one of the very blocks where the seminal movie was shot in Bed-Stuy, with hundreds and hundreds of people coming out to bask in all things summer while also paying homage to such an influential piece of cinema.

"We appreciate you," Lee told the crowd. "Every year we come out and it's just peace, it's love, it's fun. Everybody's having a good time. These are the block parties I grew up on. This is us — summertime, block party, DJ, fire hydrants, barbecue, weed, nutcrackers."

Those in attendance enjoyed the sounds of DJ Spinna and DJ Sketch as Lee danced on stage to their set, which included several throwbacks from Michael Jackson's catalog. In years past, the annual block party doubled as a birthday celebration for the singer.

In addition to those in Brooklyn celebrating the classic 1989 film, the movie also made an anticipated return to the big screen. Cinemas throughout the United States broadcasted Do The Right Thing, with some cities even showing the flick in its 35mm original format.

On top of that, Do The Right Thing will also be released with 4k restoration on Blu-Ray/DVD and will be available for sale beginning July 23.

For the uninitiated, Lee garnered a nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Do The Right Thing at the Oscars after its release. While he didn't win at the time, decades later he took home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman in February 2019. Years prior, in 2015, he was awarded an honorary Academy Award for his contributions to filmmaking.
