Earlier this month, the Crips filed a trademark on the slogan in order to "better the lives of youth in the community," The Blast reports. Legal documents obtained by the site show the organization's plans to use the trademark for a host of services, including "developing educational manuals for others in the field of community organizing, gang prevention, gang intervention."
According to the report, the Crips want to use the popular slogan for youth sports programs, concert bookings, and radio or television programs, including but not limited to "entertainment in the nature of boxing contests" and "entertainment services in the nature of development, creation, production, distribution, and post-production of documentaries and films."
The application also mentions the creation of entertainment services for "celebrities, comedians, singers, rappers, and dancers."
Hussle was notably affiliated with L.A.'s Rollin' 60s Crips and proudly repped the street gang before his passing. At press time, it is unclear if his family is in support of the recent move to capitalize off of the expression.
The slogan first entered the beloved rapper's lexicon when the Los Angeles native named his second mixtape The Marathon Continues. The project was a follow-up to his debut mixtape, The Marathon, released in 2010.
Hussle reportedly never obtained for a trademark of the phrase for himself. A documentary, titled "The Marathon Continues" is expected to be released on "all streaming platforms" this summer. The Crips indicated as such in their trademark filing.
