On Tuesday (March 19), the Championships rapper received the state key to Connecticut in light of his work on criminal justice reform. Meek was in town performing at the XFINITY Theatre in Hartford when he accepted the special honor. Connecticut State Rep. Brandon McGee also issued a state-level proclamation declaring the day as "Meek Mill Day" in the Nutmeg State.
The timing of the event coincides with a recent bill passed in Connecticut to restore voting rights for convicted felons who are on parole, TMZ reports. The bill aligns with the main purpose of Meek's non-profit organization, REFORM Alliance. The 31-year-old launched the criminal justice reform initiative in January with JAY-Z and several other business moguls in hopes to retool the "outdated laws that perpetuate injustice, starting with probation and parole."
On Thursday (March 14), the Philly native was also honored with his own three-day holiday weekend in the City of Brotherly Love. The tribute came less than three weeks after Houston bestowed Meek with his own day in their city on February 24. "Philly gave me a meek weekend!!!!! Thank you to my city!" he wrote on Instagram to celebrate.
In addition to inspiring criminal justice reform bills, Meek is also hoping to inspire others by sharing his personal history with the broken prison system when his six-part docuseries, "Free Meek," debuts on Amazon Prime this Summer.
On Monday (March 18), the "Going Bad" rapper released the first trailer for the upcoming project — co-produced by Roc Nation — on Instagram writing, "[Free Meek] explores my life and the flaws in the criminal justice system that have haunted me and others like me."
If the trailer for the docuseries is any indication, Meek's fight for prison reform is far from over. Keep reading to see a photo of Meek receiving the key to Connecticut ahead.
