After turning himself into authorities early Thursday (Feb. 21) morning, the "Empire" actor has officially been released from Cook County jail after paying $10,000 bond.

A couple of weeks ago, Smollett filed a police report claiming that two white Trump supporters attacked him on the streets of Chicago, Illinois while he was walking to a Subway at around 2:00am local time.

As a result, the Chicago Police Department swiftly began looking for the two alleged culprits. However, as the case continued to unfold and more developments surfaced, police shockingly claimed that Smollett was behind the attack the entire time. The CPD said that he actually orchestrated the attack by hiring the two men – who turned out to be two Nigerian brothers who previously appeared on "Empire" – and practiced the attack with them beforehand. He even allegedly paid the brothers $3,500 to perform the deed.

Smollett then became a suspect in his own case because of the additional evidence that forced the "trajectory of the investigation" to shift. Chicago's top prosecutor, Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx, even recused herself from the case, after the fact, for unknown reasons.

So, Smollett handed himself over to Chicago police this morning and his bail was set at $100,000. When the star was released from jail around 3:45pm local time – less than two hours after he faced a judge in court on felony disorderly conduct charges – Smollett was accompanied by his lawyers, a bodyguard and correction officers.

As soon as he left the courthouse, the actor was swarmed by reporters and cameramen who asked for answers about why he supposedly concocted such a scheme. However, he didn't answer anyone. Instead, Smollett made his way to an awaiting black SUV where some family members greeted him inside.

If convicted, Smollett is facing one to three years behind bars. He's due back in court on March 14 where's he's expected to enter his plea.
