Kendrick Lamar has just made history as the first non-classical or jazz artist to win a Pulitzer Prize.

The rapper won the prestigious prize for his latest album, DAMN., that the Pulitzer board said today (April 16) was a "virtuosic song collection" that captured "the modern African American life."

He will win $15,000.

Other winners this year include The New York Times (Public Service), The Washington Post (Investigative Reporting); freelance reporter Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah (Feature Writing, GQ) and many more. See them all here.

In 1997, famed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis became the jazz artist to receive the honor, while Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk are among those who have won Special Citation awards posthumously.

The Pulitzer Prize is an award for achievements in newspaper, magazine and online journalism, literature, and musical composition in the United States.
