You wouldn't know it from Blue Ivy stealing the headlines—after all, at the age of six, she did outbid a handful of attendees at the second annual Wearable Art Gala this past weekend—but her mom was also there to receive an award for her humanitarian efforts.

Beyoncé was given the WACO Theater Center's first Humanitarian Award and in her acceptance speech, she explained why she keeps her philanthropic efforts quiet and why she feels she should be honoring her mother, the director of the Gala, instead for teaching her the value of giving back.

"I feel really full. I feel really, just so blessed and fortunate....I never thought people should receive awards like this because my opinion of giving is that it's reward enough. I try to keep my charitable work quiet because I feel like these things should come from the goodness of your heart and not from anything orchestrated as a campaign. And if I'm honest, I keep it quiet because I actually feel like I could be doing more. And I think the real reason I feel weird to receive this award from my mother is because I feel like I should be giving her an award tonight."

"My mother taught me through example. She taught me that if you lead with empathy, a giving heart becomes second nature. She's a master at making people feel special, that every part of their existence is important."

"She also taught me that there's something more valuable than any dollar amount, and that's time. Time to put someone else first, time to change the trajectory of a child, of a village, of a community. And time to tell another person that you matter to me, you matter to the world, and that your contributions are important. It takes time to build and nourish things. It takes time to care for each other. So, thank you, from the bottom of my heart...And thank you again to the most incredible woman, my mother. Thank you for showing me how to lead with my heart."
