Martin Shkreli, a former pharmaceutical executive infamous for increasing drug prices by 5,000 percent, was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday (March 9) after being convicted of three charges related to fraud last year.
As reported, in addition to being sentenced to a seven-year sentence, he was also ordered to forfeit more than $7.3 million in personal assets, including his one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. Shkreli purchased the rare album in 2015 for $2 million, going on to make countless headlines for putting the album on eBay (a direct violation of the agreed-upon terms) and other antics.
While in court, Shkreli was reportedly in tears and begged the judge to show mercy during the ruling.
"The only person to blame for me being here is me," he said, during the sentencing proceedings. "There is no government conspiracy to take down Martin Shkreli. I took down Martin Shkreli with my disgraceful and shameful actions."
Hip-hop fans, on the other hand, took to social media to celebrate the sentencing, with many noting they felt that justice was appropriately served.
I try to be a good person and seek justice and not be guided by anger or revenge or the desire to see someone - anyone - be hurt. But there is a dark side of me, and that side just spent ten minutes trying to find video of Martin Shkreli crying as he was being sentenced.— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) March 9, 2018

Only $500 each.
I wanna get Martin Shkreli’s tears and sell them at an artificially inflated price.— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) March 9, 2018
PLOT TWIST: What if Martin Shkreli takes the Wu-Tang album to jail with him, and they use their contractual, one-time heist attempt to break him out??— The 20 Million Dollar Man (@standwithdick) March 9, 2018
People tried to tell Martin Shkreli that Wu-Tang Clan was nothing to fuck with.— Marie Connor (@thistallawkgirl) March 9, 2018
I feel like we should still be talking every day about the prospective juror at Martin Shkreli's trial who admitted being biased against Shrkreli because he "disrespected the Wu Tang Clan." We should tell that story to each other forever.— Scott Wampler™ (@ScottWamplerBMD) March 8, 2018
I'll pay $130,000 for video of Martin Shkreli crying and give it to Wu Tang for them to keep forever.— Bekka Supp (@valhallabckgirl) March 10, 2018
Seven years is a pretty light sentence for disrespecting the Wu Tang. 🤔https://t.co/gF45UodSYz— Kevin Stewart (@kstewart) March 9, 2018
