In honor of International Women's Day (March 8), streaming services Apple Music and Spotify both showed love to the ladies.
As reported, Apple Music revealed its top 20 women in streaming list, which just so happens to be topped by the ever-empowering Rihanna, with Taylor Swift and Beyoncé following her lead. Interestingly enough, each artist in the top 3 has excluded their music from Apple's platform at one point or another throughout their careers.
The remaining top 10 is made up of Ariana Grande, Adele, Sia, Lana Del Rey, Selena Gomez, SZA, and Lady Gaga. Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Halsey, Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony, Pink, Kehlani, Mariah Carey, Little Mix and Miley Cyrus make up the rest of the list.
Simultaneously, Spotify shared a new feature that may come as a surprise to music fans who think they are well-rounded when it comes to listening to artists across gender.
In a new partnership with Smirnoff, a custom generator takes a user's personal listening data and reveals the percentage of music being listened to in terms of female versus male. For those who habitually listen to more male artists, Spotify will generously create a more balanced playlist.
According to a press release, the idea for the equalizer stemmed from the fact that there was a lack of female representation in Spotify's 2017 Year in Music statistics.
