This week, the one and only dramatic, asiatic, and not like many, Big Daddy Kane meets the Drink Champs. The iconic rhymer joins N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN for a few glasses of legacy retrospect, all as this year marks 30 years since he debuted on the scene with 1988's Long Live the Kane.
In this episode of Drink Champs, Kane shares epic stories from his long-running career, including one infamous incident that occurred backstage at a show with Slick Rick.
First, let's set the scene.
Around 1988, or 1989, Big Daddy Kane and Slick Rick were co-headliners on the Public Enemy tour. Because they were co-headliners, both rappers often rotated the prime slot before PE hit the stage. Tensions soon flared between the two after it became apparent that Rick was arriving to the shows purposely late as a way to perform after Kane. Mister Cee, who was Kane's DJ at the time, confirmed the story during a 2015 interview on Cipha Sounds & Peter Rosenberg's Juan Epstein podcast.
Once it became clear, Kane confronted his pal about the suspicious issue. Things quickly got sour. According to Cee, Rick's replied to Kane, "Fuck that, I'm Slick Rick the Ruler." A tussle then ensued, which culminated with Rick pulling out a small .22 caliber pistol. Fortunately, the confrontation didn't go any further.
Asked if there was any truth to the incident, Kane, following a quick laugh, replied, "There might be some truth to that." Adding some context, he later confirmed, "[It was] about the order of the show."
