Of all the foils our controversy-courting President has had in his decades of public beefs, he may truly have met his match in LaVar Ball, a man for whom attention is oxygen and whose sense of showmanship transcends his station in life. Ball is the father of one of the UCLA basketball players who Trump has taken credit for having released from prison in China for shoplifting, and his war of words with our President over whether Ball is showing Trump sufficient gratitude for this has yielded a remarkable Thanksgiving Twitter beef, with Trump calling Ball "a poor man's version of Don King without the hair." He ends by calling him an "ungrateful fool" which is a charged dig on this of all weeks.
It wasn’t the White House, it wasn’t the State Department, it wasn’t father LaVar’s so-called people on the ground in China that got his son out of a long term prison sentence - IT WAS ME. Too bad! LaVar is just a poor man’s version of Don King, but without the hair. Just think..— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 22, 2017
...LaVar, you could have spent the next 5 to 10 years during Thanksgiving with your son in China, but no NBA contract to support you. But remember LaVar, shoplifting is NOT a little thing. It’s a really big deal, especially in China. Ungrateful fool!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 22, 2017
Trump's race-baiting and vaguely King-demeaning bluster is especially odd considering King is such a vocal proponent of the 45th president. Don't take our word for it, though -- take King's words to us at the 2016 Republican National Convention:
Anyway, this may be Thanksgiving week, but Trump shouldn't expect any from Ball, who has made it clear that he is "not going to go around saying thank you to everyone." At this rate, and given their dispositions, Trump-Ball could be a beef that lingers far longer than the duration of this administration. Especially if we're waiting for someone else to have the last word, because, for all of their media prowess, neither of these men have any skill in that department.
