Fresh off of scoring his first Billboard Top 40 hit with “Almost Like Praying,” Lin-Manuel Miranda stopped by The Breakfast Club. Miranda, most notably known as the creator and star of successful Broadway musicals Hamilton and In the Heights, met with Angela Yee, DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God to discuss his charity single, his departure from the smash-hit Hamilton and working to rebuild Puerto Rico following the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria.
“Almost Like Praying,” was crafted as a direct result of the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico and the nearby U.S. Virgin Islands. The song features several superstar artists with Puerto Rican roots, including Jennifer “Jenny from the Block” Lopez and Fat Joe, and samples the popular “Maria” from the classic film West Side Story. “I flipped the sample, because everyone sends thoughts and prayers in wake of a tragedy, but prayers aren’t enough,” he said. “We need food, we need supplies, we need water.”
Last summer, Miranda left the cast of Hamilton after several years in the Tony Award-winning musical. He spoke about his decision to walk away from his role as Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. “I had the idea for Hamilton on my first vacation from In The Heights, so what that teaches me is that the good ideas don’t come when you have 50 things to do. They come when you actually get a breath and you get a second to daydream,” he said. He also admitted that he had a timeline from the beginning. “I have like a warranty after a year,” he said. “My voice will give out. My back will give out. I gave myself a year to do it.”
Life after a critically-acclaimed run as the hip-hop Alexander Hamilton seems bright for not just Miranda, who currently has the No. 1 song on the Digital Song Sales chart, but also for the people of Puerto Rico. For now, he says his focus is on relief efforts for the island. “Honestly, my next passion projects is getting the lights back on in Puerto Rico.”
