While adjectives such as fearless, talented, kind-hearted, courageous, admirable, hilarious and strong all ring true when it comes to attempting to wholly describe the essence that makes up the dynamic Queen Latifah, REVOLT chose to highlight one that simply cannot be disputed and just might sum it up best:
Honoring Queen Latifah as this year's recipient of the Jimmy Iovine Icon Award helped add to the weekend's magic, with the luminary being celebrated at the 2017 REVOLT Music Conference during a distinguished and dazzling award ceremony, made possible by Cadillac.
After attendees of the fourth-annual conference spent the weekend posted up at the Eden Roc resort in Miami Beach networking and soaking up industry insight, they also caught a slew of live performances, and ultimately were able to witness the culture celebrating the Queen and her many achievements across business, music, film and philanthropy.
The room was packed wall-to-wall as some of Queen Latifah's closest friends made it a point to be there in person. While everyone from Monica, Fab 5 Freddy, Shakim Compere, and of course, REVOLT's own Chairman, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Vice Chairman, Andre Harrell, came to the stage to share personal anecdotes, industry heavyweights such as T.I., Eva Marcille, Cassie, Justine Skye, David Banner, Mysonne, Lauren London, Bre-Z, Mack Wilds, King Combs, Joey Bada$$, Fat Boy SSE were also proudly in the building, with Ryan Destiny and Quincy flawlessly executing their hosting duties.
Opening the evening was a series of personally-shot testimonials from Latifah's friends who were supportive remotely. Lee Daniels, Big Boi, Toni Braxton, Q-Tip, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Common all showed love through their videos.
The most powerful pre-recording was perhaps from Queen Latifah's dear friend and peer, MC Lyte. Partnering with Cadillac as she shared personal stories of how Latifah has inspired not only her, but women in general over the course of her career to be fearless and bold, the Queen was blown away.
As the night progressed, Daniel Caesar broke the ice with an incredible performance, followed up by the incomparable SZA, who not only performed a slew of her popular songs, but also took an emotional moment to unapologetically fangirl over the Queen, admitting that between Living Single, her music and just being a source of inspiration from New Jersey, Queen Latifah saved her life "over and over and over again."
Coming to the stage to hand off the award, Sean "Diddy" Combs said simply of the Queen, "When you think about Black excellence and what that looks like, when I think about it, I see an image of Queen Latifah."
As the audience roared in support of that statement, Queen Latifah herself took the stage and thanked REVOLT, Mr. Combs and everyone in attendance.
"This is beautiful," Latifah said, with gratitude present in her voice. "That is a perfect award, look at that. Wow. Thank you so much. This is incredible. I've never been honored in such a way, ever. This is bananas. My parents taught me who I was and they raised me to be a queen."
With a special tribute by the illustrious Lauryn Hill closing out the evening, performing a medley of timeless classics both from her catalog and Latifah's alike, love and respect was ever-present in the air, reminding us that true icons, don't just set a good example for others, but their energy can be felt from afar and from within.
Congrats to Queen Latifah again as she continues to Dare Greatly!
