J. Cole executive produced new coming of age documentary, 'Raising Bertie'

Even while he is on the road or being a recluse, J. Cole finds time to bring untold stories to light.

This week, it has been announced that the North Carolina rapper's executive produced documentary, called "Raising Bertie," will premiere on PBS on August 28.

The film, which opened in select theaters earlier this summer, chronicles a six-year portrait of three African American boys growing into adulthood in the rural Bertie County in North Carolina. Filmmaker Margaret Bryne captures the dynamics between Reginald "Junior" Askew, David "Bud" Perry, and Davonte "Dada" Harrell as they deal with societal ills, feats, and heartbreak.

"I didn't want to focus on stories of the exceptional," Byrne said in a statement. "The truth is, I made a film about three kids I met and I cared about. The individuals in this story are representative of their community and they matter."

"Raising Bertie" arrives on PBS on August 28th. Check out the trailer below.
