After years as the arguable MVP of rap, Drake will help award the NBA's MVP this year. Drizzy took to social media this morning to announce that he will be hosting the first ever NBA Awards on Monday, June 26.
The NBA is capitalizing on its rising fame with a mega program to honor its superstars, instead of just the regular press release and press conference and “breaking news” announcement on SportsCenter. The show takes place in New York at Basketball City at Pier 36, and will be broadcast on TNT.

The major categories this year that will be given out during the show include the NBA Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, Sixth Man Award, Defensive Player of the Year, and Most Improved Player.
The most intriguing award this year has to be for MVP. To many, Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder seems to be the front runner. Besides leading the league in points at 31.6, he also averaged 10.4 assists and 10.7 rebounds. He had 42 triple-doubles this year, and is the first player to average a triple-double for an entire season since Oscar Robertson did it over 50 years ago in the 1961-62 season. Meanwhile, Westbrook’s stiffest competition comes from the Houston Rockets’ James Harden, who led the league in assists with 11.2. The Rockets had a better overall regular season record than the Thunder, and lead OKC 3-1 in their first-round playoff matchup. But the awards are only based on regular season play.
The NBA announced today that the finalists for the aforementioned awards will be announced this Thursday on TNT’s “Inside The NBA” and even more award categories will be revealed. No word yet if Drake or any other artists will perform on June 26.
The ceremony also continues Drake's building relationship with the NBA. He's a global ambassador for his hometown Toronto Raptors, and the squad has an annual Drake Night that gives attendees free limited edition t-shirts and plays his music through the arena.
