For fans Poetic Justice, no one will ever forget one of the classic film's first scenes in which Q-Tip engages in a serious lip lock with real-life ex-girlfriend Janet Jackson at a drive-in movie theater. Shortly after, Tip’s character gets killed, thus setting up Janet’s character emotional state for most of the movie.
During a recent visit to the show Drink Champs on REVOLT, Tip—joined by Jarobi from A Tribe Called Quest, Consequence and Busta Rhymes—revealed that although he enjoyed kissing Janet in the scene (they shot it around 11 times), the conditions where they were shooting weren’t ideal. It was April 29, 1992 and the verdict for Rodney King's police brutality case had just been announced in Simi Valley, Calif. The cast and crew were shooting just two miles from the court house and, as a security precaution, stayed on set as unrest started to break out in the streets. It was freezing outside that night and Tip and Janet both took ill.
“We caught a fucking cold,” Tip told Drink Champs hosts Nore and DJ EFN about filming. “Everybody [on set] damn near [got sick]. She was sick, I was sick.”
Of course, Tip wasn’t the only person Janet kissed in the film. Her and Tupac were cast as love interests. But before Pac and Janet would make-out onscreen, the pop icon requested that the hip-hop legend take an AIDS test.
“I don’t know what that decision was on her part to be like, ‘He has to get a AIDS test,’” Tip said. “But she was definitely, ‘Well, if I’m going to kiss with him, he definitely has to.’”
The Abstract Poetic said 'Pac was upset by the request.
“Me and the niggas was talking about it in his trailer. And he was like, ‘Don’t you know, they asked me to take a mutha! f—kin! AIDS! test!,” Tip recalled. “Nigga was hot. He was hot. I was like, ‘Word?’ He was like, ‘I could see if I was f—kin’ the bitch, then I’d understand. But the scene ain’t none of [that.]’ That’s how the nigga was.”
You can see the full episode of “Drink Champs” tonight on REVOLT TV at 11 P.M. The conversations get deep as Tribe, Busta Rhymes and Consequence talk about a misunderstanding with Pac that almost led to serious beef, Kanye West calling Tip out onstage and of course the new album We Got It From Here… Thank You For Your Service going number one.
