New York Fashion Week S/S 2017: Jerome LaMaar speaks through rising tides

This past Thursday (September 8), Jerome LaMaar took his guests to the sea with shells and underwater creatures as motifs for his S/S 17 collection. While LaMaar is expanding his brand reach constantly, he is not too shy to admit he's been in this game for some time now. You may have seen him designing for Baby Phat on Kimora Lee's television show Life in the Fab Lane or designing clothes seen on stars like Beyoncé. As a true student of fashion, this Bronx native puts all of himself into his craft and every single detail.

Recently, LaMaar's friend of many years, Leo Valasquez, was swept away at sea. Valasquez was well-known in the industry as a barber, stylist, designer, tastemaker, and friend. Having a long client list with talents like Swizz Beatz, Chris Brown, Miguel, and Kid Cudi to name a few, his loss was very impactful on the fashion and entertainment community.

Mourning the loss of his dear friend, LaMaar took this energy as a moment to pay tribute and took inspiration from the sea and rising tides to engrave his own message through his clothing. He used sequins, Swarovski crystals, and mixed fabrics all in one to create garments that are nothing short of beautiful. The most touching of these moments is on the back of a shirt, which features a poem appropriately titled, "Away."

Throughout the presentation onlookers were able to feel and understand LaMaar's vision and message, leaving the room in awe.
