One man is dead in Houston after an officer-involved shooting occurred early this morning (July 9).
According to reports, a pair of officers were on patrol just before 1 a.m. when they allegedly spotted a man standing in the middle of the street waving a revolver. As per Click 2 Houston, a Houston NBC affiliate, when cops ordered the man, later identified as Alva Braziel, to put down the weapon, he reportedly pointed it in the air and then at the officers. Soon after, both officers opened fire at Braziel, who was later identified by a woman believed to be his wife. He died at the scene.
The two officers involved have been on the force for 10 and 13 years. The names of the officers have yet to be identified and according to ABC 13, a Houston ABC affiliate, both officers were wearing body cameras. An investigation is underway.
A gas station near the scene captured the incident at the scene, which many believe will confirm what took place, along with testimonies from witnesses. Another video, filmed after the shooting, made its way to social media.
This shooting occurs just hours after five officers were killed in Dallas during a peaceful protest. Many on social media offered responses to the latest incident, some questioning the aftermath while others noting the Texas' open carry law — which allow those with permits to openly carry handguns. It is unclear if Braziel had a permit.
And, again...Texas is an open carry state. So even IF #AlvaBraziel had a gun, that's well within his rights, right??— Reagan Gomez (@ReaganGomez) July 9, 2016
I didn't realize there was another shooting, much less in Houston on the south side. Gun or not, 10 shots is excessive. #AlvaBraziel— Michael Arceneaux (@youngsinick) July 9, 2016
