After tragedy strikes, many are left wondering what they can do to help beyond posting hashtags and sending "thoughts and prayers."
Actress and writer Issa Rae has already launched a GoFundMe scholarship account in an effort to support the children of Alton Sterling, who died Tuesday (July 5) after being shot by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
And now writer-director Xavier Burgin has followed her lead, creating a fund as well for the family of Philando Castile, who was killed by law enforcement on Wednesday (July 6) in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Burgin wrote, "I've spoken up on police violence and the issues we face in the past, but this time, I want to try and use my platform to help in a tangible way as well.... I want to make sure I'm completely transparent and honest as I curate this GoFundMe.... As I said before, I will keep none of these funds, once I'm able to get in contact with the family of Philando Castile and confirm it's them, I will send all funds that are raised here to them."
At the moment, $20,393 of the $40k goal has been raised, by 777 people in just 14 hours.
