On Wednesday (March 2), the world was treated with the first teaser for “Nina,” the long-in-the-works biopic of Nina Simone starring Zoe Saldana. Backed by years of controversy, surrounding the casting of Saldana, the uproar was once again revived when the trailer hit online.
.@zoesaldana Cool story but please take Nina's name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.— Nina Simone (@NinaSimoneMusic) March 3, 2016
Saldana was casted in the film back in 2012, which left many critics upset due to the actresses decent (Dominican and Puerto Rican). Controversy followed the trailer, as many pointed at Saldana’s visibly darkened skin for the role along with her wearing a prosthetic nose.
Hopefully people begin to understand this is painful. Gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, nauseating, soul-crushing. It shall pass, but for now...— Nina Simone (@NinaSimoneMusic) March 3, 2016
“Nina” is set to hit theaters on April 22.
