Blackground Records is holding two immersive pop-up experiences in New York City to celebrate the life and legacy of Aaliyah. On Tuesday (Sept. 7), the official Blackground Records 2.0 Instagram account announced the “More Than A Woman: The Aaliyah Experience” in partnership with Six Degrees and Pandora.
According to the posts, the first pop-up event will take place in New York City this Friday (Sept. 10) and has already sold out. However, fans can still find tickets for the second experience, which is scheduled for Saturday (Sept. 11), here. On Friday, Blackground Records will also release Aaliyah, the late star’s third studio album, on streaming services.
A website dedicated to the event describes it as a “multi-set” experience that will bring Aaliyah’s career “to life.” A flyer for the event also says “NYC COVID protocols will be strictly enforced.”
“More Than A Woman: The Aaliyah Experience” is Blackground Records’ latest initiative to celebrate the beloved singer’s legacy. Last month, the record label announced its partnership with EMPIRE and plan to bring Aaliyah’s music to streaming services. Aaliyah’s 1996 sophomore album One In A Million hit streaming platforms in August and debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 — the highest ranking it’s ever achieved on the chart.
Barry Hankerson, Aaliyah’s uncle and co-founder of Blackground Records, thanked her fans after the album’s successful release.
“Thank you to all of her many fans for keeping her music alive,” he wrote in an Instagram post at the time. “I’m sorry it took so long, but when you lose a family member so unexpectedly, it takes time to deal with that type of grief. I decided to release Aaliyah’s music in order to keep her legacy alive.”
