50 Cent had a few words to share about the Emmys after white actors took home all the awards in the show’s acting categories. On Sunday (Sept. 19), the emcee shared a screenshot of a Variety article titled “No actors of color win at Emmys despite record nominee lineup.” Alongside the post, he included his critique of the annual ceremony.
“Listen the Emmys still has a separate bathroom for colored folks,” he wrote in a post that has since been deleted. “I’m gonna put the NAACP Awards on the air at the same time and fuck up there numbers. No, they really should be afraid of me. I’m different.”
His post mirrors sentiments he once expressed after his hit show “Power” was excluded from the 2019 Emmys nominations. “The EMMYS can kiss my Black ass in slow motion,” he wrote at the time. “Fuck em I’m #1. They a bunch of Bengay, my back hurt, smiling ass, old people anyway.”
While none of the 49 people of color who were nominated for acting awards took home a trophy, there were a few that were victorious in other categories. RuPaul won the award for Outstanding Competition Program, which makes him the most-awarded Black person in Emmys history. Debbie Allen accepted the Governors Award, and Michaela Coel won the award Best Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her work on “I May Destroy You.”
During her speech, which she dedicated to survivors of sexual assault, she encouraged writers to create stories that aren’t comfortable.
“Write the title that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn’t comfortable,” Coel said. “I dare you in a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to in turn, fill the need to be constantly visible.”
“For visibility these days seems to equate to success,” she continued. “Do not be afraid to disappear from it, from us for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence.”
